The Raven Text Set

Image
For my text set, I created a list of texts and multimedia outlets to help discuss my anchor text, The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. I imagine using these texts to assist in either a Poe unit or a general unit on Poetry. Most of my text sets will be discussing Poe's background and general information regarding The Raven. I have also selected a few texts that will help explain Figurative Language after we have read and analyzed the poem. The Raven is a very popular classic novel, and I think it's important, but can be very difficult to read. I think having all these texts, videos, and info-graphics, will ultimately help students understand the meaning behind The Raven, and how to accurately analyze and understand the poem. I would plan on using this poem for a 9th or 10th grade English class! The texts are as follows: THE RAVEN by Edgar Allen Poe (anchor text) Link to the Poem:  https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/48860/the-raven Poe, Edgar A. "The Raven." Edg

Visualization Project - Elements of Plot

Image
For my visualization project, I decided to do a info-graphic to help inform students about the elements of plot. I think this would be a very helpful handout for them to use when going through other short stories and novels, and using it to help them identify these points throughout the text. I chose the info-graphic because it allowed me to explain each element of a story, while also using pictures of an actual movie to help show examples of each. I ended up writing a small excerpt for each element along with a question to help them understand the meaning behind each element. These questions could help them during other texts and allow them to identify these elements on their own. With the visual, I included scenes from the first Harry Potter movie, to provide an example using actual scenes from the movie. This example would help them find other examples in other texts. What I like about this info-graphic, is that I can change up the movie that I would want to use to

Texting, Technology, and Teaching

I am going to become an English Teacher, and one of the concerns that I have is teaching students who are using social media for most of their communication. Social media is a huge outlet that allows students to use their writing, reading, and communication skills all in one. I appreciate the ability that social media has on getting students to read, even if it’s very informally. Facebook for instance, always has articles, news sources, as well as their personal status updates, but it all allows them to read constantly. What social media also has, is it’s own form of language. This special language is completely different than what is expected when writing for school or professional setting. Students are so familiar with this language and use it so often, it makes me wonder what effect it has when they have to write formal papers. I, myself, use this lingo here and there, but because I am read and write for fun, I understand when to use the lingo and when to use the “sta

My name is Nicole Deerr and I am a Post-Bacc student at UWM, and working towards getting my license to become a High School English Teacher! I already have a degree in Psychology because I was passionate about helping people, but after a few jobs in the social work field, I felt that there was something missing. I always had English on the back burner of my mind, and after working with City Year Milwaukee, where I tutored and mentored high school students in their English classes, I realized I could put the two together! My love of helping youth as well as reading and writing! My guilty pleasure has always been YA Literature, and I am glad that I can take my love of this genre into my future classroom! I also love the creative writing process and loved seeing how creative kids can be! I am also attempting to write my own YA fantasy novel! I hope to not only teach standard English classes, but also help foster and engage students in Creative Writing classes as well! The site below i
